Canon Inkjet Error Codes

Canon inkjet printers can show error codes when there is a cartridge issue, paper feed problem, carriage obstruction, waste ink warning or print-head fault. Use this guide to understand the most common Canon error messages and what to try next.

Quick checks first Many Canon errors can be caused by paper, cartridge seating or a simple printer memory issue.

Before looking up the code, try these first

These simple checks are safe and can resolve many Canon inkjet errors before more detailed troubleshooting is needed.

Restart the printer

Turn the printer off at the plug, wait a few minutes, then reconnect and power it back on.

Check for obstructions

Look for torn paper, paperclips, labels or anything that could block the carriage or paper feed.

Reseat cartridges

Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges firmly, checking they are in the correct colour slots.

Take a photo

If the fault continues, photograph the error code and any visible issue before contacting support.

Common Canon inkjet error codes

Find the error code shown on your Canon printer and follow the suggested checks. Some repairs may not be economical depending on the age and value of the printer.

Error B200

Print-head or power-related fault

B200 is one of the more serious Canon inkjet errors. It can point to a print-head problem or, in some cases, a printer power supply fault.

  • Turn the printer off and unplug it for several minutes.
  • Remove and reseat the cartridges if the carriage can be accessed safely.
  • If the error returns immediately, the print head may have failed.
  • On some models, print-head replacement can cost more than replacing the printer.
Error 5100

Carriage movement problem

Error 5100 usually means the ink carriage cannot move correctly, often because something is blocking the carriage path.

  • Turn off and unplug the printer before inspecting inside.
  • Check for small pieces of paper, labels or foreign objects.
  • Make sure the cartridges are fitted correctly and not sticking out.
  • The encoder film may be dirty, but it is delicate and should be cleaned with care.
Error #335

Electronic or connection error

Error #335 can relate to an electronic connection issue, including the connection between the print head and the printer.

  • Turn off and unplug the printer for a few minutes.
  • If your model allows it, remove and reinstall the print head and cartridges.
  • Check that any accessible print-head connections are firmly seated.
  • Download the latest driver or support software from Canon if required.
Error #336

Cleaning or gear movement issue

Error #336 is often linked with noises from the printer gears and can occur during print-head cleaning.

  • Check for dried ink or foreign objects around the print-head parking area.
  • Look carefully on the right-hand side where the carriage rests.
  • Restart the printer after removing any visible obstruction.
  • If the noise continues, the printer may need service or replacement.
Error #343 / 5800

Waste ink absorber or counter warning

These errors usually relate to the printer’s waste ink absorber or internal waste ink counter. The absorber collects excess ink during cleaning cycles.

  • Do not keep resetting the printer without checking the absorber condition.
  • Some printers require disassembly to access the absorber pads safely.
  • Resetting the counter may allow printing to continue, but it does not remove the waste ink.
  • If you are unsure, contact support before attempting any repair.
Error #357

Paper position problem

Error #357 can happen when paper is not loaded or positioned correctly, or when the print head cannot return to its expected position.

  • Remove and reload the paper carefully.
  • Check for small pieces of torn paper or foreign objects inside the printer.
  • Check whether any ink pads or internal parts look raised or out of place.
  • Restart the printer and see whether the carriage resets normally.
Error #359

Paper feed issue

Error #359 usually points to a paper feed problem. Small objects can sometimes fall into the paper feed path.

  • Remove the paper and inspect the feed area.
  • Check for paperclips, pins, labels or torn paper.
  • Reload the paper neatly and avoid overfilling the tray.
  • Turn the printer off, unplug it for a few minutes, then restart.
Error 5C00

Purge unit or sensor issue

Error 5C00 is usually linked to the purge unit area, where the cartridge holder rests when not printing.

  • Turn off and unplug the printer before checking inside.
  • Remove the cartridges and inspect the cartridge holder area.
  • Gently clean obvious ink build-up with a slightly damp cotton bud if safe to access.
  • If the error persists, the purge unit or sensor may need service.

When to keep troubleshooting — and when to stop

Some Canon errors are simple paper or cartridge issues. Others can point to internal printer faults.

Safe checks to try

  • Restart the printer from the plug.
  • Remove and reseat cartridges.
  • Check for visible paper jams or objects.
  • Reload paper neatly and check the guides.
  • Run a cleaning or maintenance cycle if the printer menu allows it.

Stop and ask for advice if...

  • The printer makes grinding or clicking noises.
  • The same code returns immediately after a restart.
  • You can see leaked ink inside the printer.
  • The error points to a print-head, purge unit or power fault.
  • You need to dismantle the printer to reach the affected part.
Important: Waste ink absorber and print-head faults can be messy or uneconomical to repair. If you are not sure, send us the Canon model number, the exact error code and a clear photo of the printer display.
