USB4 is the most recent update in the evolution of USB. The maximum bandwidth is now 40Gbps, double the previous best spec of 20Gbps (USB3.2 Gen 2x2). It is based on Thunderbolt 3 technology ensuring greater compatibility with all USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 devices.

DisplayPort Alt-Mode 2.0
DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 provides all of the features in the latest version of the DisplayPort standard (version 2.0) through the USB Type-C® (USB-C) connector. It can transmit up to 80 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of DisplayPort video data utilizing all four high-speed lanes in the cable, or up to 40 Gbps with simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data delivery.

USB4 offers greater compatibility with previous specs supporting not only USB 3.2 (Gen 1 & 2) and USB 2.0 devices but also supports Thunderbolt 3 running at 40Gbps. (Compatibility with Thunderbolt 3 is only optional for USB4 hosts and devices.)
