If after installing a new toner cartridge your printer continues to show the 'Toner Low' or 'Replace Toner' error, you may need to reset the toner counter in your printer to continue printing.

 

Quite a few Brother laser printers do not have the capacity to precisely determine the level of toner remaining within a cartridge. These printers depend on a built-in toner counter to confirm when the cartridge needs be replaced. The toner counter has a fixed number of pages that can be printed before you see a warning message advising that you require a new toner cartridge. When you install a new toner cartridge the inbuilt counter should automatically reset once the data on the cartridge chip is read, however, if the printer does not recognise the cartridge as new, the error will remain. 

 

Below we list the toner reset methods for a number of Brother laser printers.

 

Brother HL 2030/2040/2070N

2) Simultaneously Press “Reprint” and “Cancel”

3) Display shows B-TNR-S or B-TNR-H

 

(The first letter indicates the colour, In this case B means black. The last letter indicates the toner capacity - S means Standard TN-130 and H indicates High Capacity TN-135)

 

4) Select the toner cartridge type and colour you want to reset using the up-arrow

5) Press "OK" and wait few seconds

6) Press "Stop"

7) Close the printer front cover. Now printer is ready for printing.

 

Brother HL-3040CN/3070CW

Reset process

 

1) Open the printer front cover

2) Simultaneously Press “Secure Print” and “Cancel”

3) Display shows K-TNR-STD or K-TNR-STR

 

(The first letter indicates the colour, In this case K means black. The last letter indicates the toner cartridge model - STD means TN-230 and STR indicates starter cartridge without any name or code)

 

4) Pressing "+" select the toner cartridge type and colour you want to reset

5) Press "OK" and wait few seconds

6) Press "Cancel"
