Quick checks for common toner problems

Before returning a toner cartridge, try these checks. They are safe, simple and solve many common laser printer issues.

Not recognised

Printer rejects the toner cartridge

If your printer says the toner is missing, faulty or not recognised, start with the basics.

  • Check the toner cartridge is the correct model for your printer.
  • Remove and reinstall the cartridge firmly.
  • Switch the printer off at the plug for around 10 minutes, then restart.
  • Carefully wipe the cartridge chip/contact area with dry tissue.
Faint or blank print

Faint, blank or patchy pages

Light or blank output is often caused by toner not feeding correctly or a seal still being in place.

  • Check the removable toner seal has been fully pulled out.
  • Gently rock the cartridge from side to side to distribute toner powder.
  • Print several test pages to allow toner to settle and flow.
  • Check whether the drum unit is near the end of its life.
Marks or dots

Dots, streaks or repeated marks

Repeating marks down the page can be caused by toner dust or debris on an internal roller or drum surface.

  • Run your printer’s calibration or cleaning cycle if available.
  • Print a few normal pages to see if the mark clears.
  • Check whether the issue repeats at the same point down the page.
  • If the mark continues, the drum or toner cartridge may need checking.
Tip: If you contact us about a toner issue, please include your order number, printer model, toner code and a photo of the error message or print problem. This helps us resolve things faster.

General toner help

These answers cover the toner questions customers ask most often, including recognition errors, chip behaviour, toner levels, drum units and firmware updates.

Should I shake or rock a toner cartridge before installing it?

Yes. Gently rock the cartridge from side to side a few times before installation. Toner is a very fine powder, and this helps settle it into the correct position before printing.

Why does my printer still not recognise the toner?

Some printers use both a toner cartridge and a separate drum unit. If the drum has reached the end of its life, the printer may still refuse to print even after a new toner has been fitted.

Why is the toner level indicator not showing?

Some compatible or remanufactured toners may not display the printer’s toner level bar in the same way as the original cartridge. This does not always affect print performance.

What should I do if the printer says the toner is missing or faulty?

Remove the cartridge, turn the printer off at the socket and leave it for around 10 minutes. While waiting, carefully wipe the cartridge chip or contact area with dry tissue, then reinstall the cartridge.

Why has my toner suddenly stopped printing?

Some toner cartridges have chips or counters that tell the printer when the cartridge has reached its limit. If the chip has reached the end of its counter, the cartridge may stop working even if some toner remains.

Why are dots repeating down the page?

Repeated dots can happen when a small amount of toner has settled on an internal component. A calibration cycle or printing a few normal pages may clear the issue.

Is a small amount of toner leakage normal?

A small amount of loose toner can sometimes appear when removing a used cartridge, especially where waste toner has collected during normal printer cleaning cycles.

Should I update my printer firmware?

Be careful with automatic firmware updates, especially if you use compatible or remanufactured cartridges. Some printer updates can affect how non-original cartridges are recognised.

HP LaserJet toner troubleshooting

HP LaserJet printers can display a range of toner and supply messages. These quick answers cover the most common HP toner issues customers ask us about.

Why does my HP printer say “Install cartridge” or “Cartridge missing”?

Remove the toner cartridge and check it has been installed firmly. Make sure any orange clips, seals or protective packaging have been removed. Then turn the printer off, wait a minute, and turn it back on before trying again.

What should I do if my HP printer does not recognise the toner?

Remove the cartridge and carefully check the chip/contact area. Wipe the contact gently with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth or tissue, then reinstall the cartridge. Also check the cartridge code matches your exact HP printer model.

Why does my HP printer say the toner is low or very low?

HP printers estimate toner levels based on usage. A low or very low warning does not always mean the cartridge will stop immediately. If print quality is still good, you may be able to continue printing until the toner is actually depleted.

Can I continue printing after a “very low” toner message?

On many HP LaserJet printers, you can acknowledge the warning and continue printing for a while. Keep a replacement toner ready, especially if the print starts to fade or your printer stops accepting the cartridge.

Why is my HP toner printing faint or patchy?

Remove the toner and gently rock it from side to side to redistribute the toner powder. Check the toner seal has been fully removed, confirm the paper type setting is correct, and print a few test pages to see whether the quality improves.

Why are there streaks, smears or repeated marks on HP prints?

This can be caused by toner dust, the paper path, the fuser, the drum/imaging unit or incorrect paper settings. Try printing a cleaning page or running the printer’s cleaning/calibration option if your model offers one.

What does “protected cartridge” mean on an HP printer?

Some HP printers have cartridge protection settings that can lock a cartridge to a particular printer or fleet. If a toner has been protected in another printer, it may not work in yours. This is different from a normal compatibility issue.

Can HP firmware updates affect toner cartridges?

Firmware updates can change how a printer recognises cartridges. If you use compatible or remanufactured toners, be cautious with automatic firmware updates and contact us if a cartridge stops working shortly after an update.

Why does my HP colour laser printer show the wrong colour issue?

If marks, streaks or missing print appear in one colour only, the issue may relate to that specific colour toner cartridge or imaging component. Try identifying whether the defect is black, cyan, magenta or yellow before contacting support.

What information should I send to Cartridge World?

Please include your order number, HP printer model, toner code, the exact error message and a clear photo of the print fault or printer display. This helps us identify whether the issue is toner, drum/imaging unit, firmware or printer related.

HP support tip: Many HP toner issues are caused by installation, cartridge contacts, paper settings, low-toner warnings or printer firmware. Try the safe checks above first, then contact us if the issue continues.

Brother toner and drum support guides

Brother laser printers often use a separate toner cartridge and drum unit. These guides explain how to replace, reset and troubleshoot common Brother toner messages.

Cleaning up spilt toner

Toner powder is very fine, so it needs to be cleaned carefully. The main rule is to avoid heat, as warm or hot water can make toner stick to surfaces or skin.

Do this

  • Stay calm and avoid spreading the toner around.
  • Gently sweep larger amounts into a bin bag using a dustpan and brush.
  • Use a cold damp disposable cloth or tissue for the remaining powder.
  • Wash toner from your hands with cold water and mild soap.
  • Unplug the printer before cleaning inside or around it.

Avoid this

  • Do not use hot or warm water.
  • Do not scrub toner into carpets, clothes or surfaces.
  • Do not use a standard vacuum cleaner unless it is suitable for fine toner powder.
  • Do not keep printing if toner is visibly leaking inside the printer.
  • Do not touch electrical contacts or internal printer parts unnecessarily.
Important: If toner has leaked inside the printer or you are unsure what to clean, contact us before continuing. Sending a photo can help us advise you safely.
